When Is It Time to Replace Your Kitchen Sink?

Here’s the good news:

When it comes to elements in your home, your kitchen sink is about as sturdy as it comes. Many people live in homes that haven’t had the kitchen sink replaced since it was built. So, oftentimes, the choice to replace a kitchen sink comes down to aesthetic preferences.

But are there signs that it may be time to change out your sink bowl? Here are a few:

  • Scratches and Stains – Regardless of what material your sink is made of, it will inevitably have some cosmetic damage after decades of use. While some of this damage doesn’t necessarily interfere with the function of your sink, things like cracks can make your sink difficult to clean.
  • Leaks – While most sink leaks are caused by faulty plumbing and not the sink basin itself, your sink basin could develop a leak! If this is the case, you’ll want to purchase a new sink as soon as possible to help avoid water damage.
  • Frequent Clogs – Tired of dealing with a clogged drain all of the time? A new sink could help decrease the number of times you have to call in a plumber for repairs.
  • Doesn’t Match Kitchen – Sometimes, when the rest of your kitchen is being updated, you need a sink that will match it. Newer sink styles will help to refresh the overall look and feel of your kitchen.

6 Types of Kitchen Sinks

Choosing a sink style that you like is hugely important! After all, kitchen sinks are one of the most used part of a home. However, it can be tricky to understand the different styles without doing some research. Here are 6 of the most popular kitchen sink styles to choose from.

1) Undermount Sinks

Undermount sinks have become a popular choice for homeowners who want a kitchen that looks sleek and streamlined. An undermount kitchen sink is installed beneath the countertop line. This allows the counter to continue uninterrupted, which is visually pleasing.

Additionally, there are some functional benefits to these types of kitchen sinks. Without a sink edge, it is easier to sweep crumbs and other debris off of your counter and into the sink. You will get slightly more counter space and can use almost any type of sink material.

Keep in mind that because your counter will be cut to accommodate your sink, it may be difficult to replace in the future.

2) Drop In Sinks

A drop in sink is probably the most common sink on the market. This sink style is placed on top of your counter, with a rim that runs all the way around the edge.

This is an affordable and classic sink that will never go out of style. It is also great for the avid DIY-er, as it can be installed easily. That being said, it does visually interrupt the line of your counter, making it less visually pleasing.

3) Farmhouse Sinks

Farmhouse sinks are everywhere these days! Personally, we can’t blame homeowners for loving them. Not only do farmhouse sinks offer charm and historical appeal, but their deep basins make them a great choice for doing dishes.

A farmhouse sink is characterized by the deep basin, which is visible from the front, rather than being placed inside the countertop. They do typically take away more counter space than the average sink, but many homeowners choose to order a custom cutting board that can be placed on top of the sink to provide workable space when needed.

4) Vessel Sinks

Vessel sinks are an interesting design that we more commonly see used in bathroom spaces. However, they can be an excellent choice for kitchens as well! Vessel sinks are placed fully on top of the kitchen counters, making a statement that all your guests will take notice of.

5) Integrated Sinks

Integrated sinks – also known as integral sinks – are built into the countertops using the same material. These types of kitchen sinks create the ultimate sleek design that looks great in ultra-modern kitchens. However, expect to pay a premium price for this custom style.

6) Double Basin Sinks

We love the organization that double basin sinks provide. They are pretty much what they sound like! Two basins sit side by side, allowing you to have a section for dirty dishes and one for clean. Or, however else you like to organize your sink!

Choosing the Right Material

Once you’ve chosen the style you like, you can choose the sink material that works best for you! Here are a few popular ones:

  • Stainless Steel Sinks – Easy to clean, modern look, very durable.
  • Cast Iron Sinks – Classic look, very heavy and sturdy, easy maintenance
  • Granite Composite Sinks – Can last for 50 years, simple maintenance
  • Acrylic Sinks – Affordable, simple to install
  • Quartz Sink – One of the most durable materials, very hard (don’t drop a dish!)
  • Porcelain Sinks – Very beautiful, easy to care for, easy to dent
